Founding Conveners

The African Border and Mobility Society (ABMS) is an initiative of Dr. Samuel Kehinde Okunade, Department of Border and Migration Studies, Lagos State University, Nigeria. The Society is co-convened by Dr. Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and Dr. Lukong Stella Shulika of the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Samuel Kehinde Okunade, Ph.D.

Samuel Kehinde Okunade, Ph.D. Chairperson Provides overall strategic leadership and serves as the chief executive of the society. Oversees the association's research agenda, collaborative research programmes, publications, institutional governance, and knowledge exchange initiatives while coordinating the work of the leadership team.

Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka, Ph.D.

Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka, Ph.D. Director of Training, Conferences and Membership Development Leads the planning and delivery of conferences, workshops, webinars, certification programmes, mentorship, and other professional development initiatives. Oversees member engagement, capacity-building, recruitment, and initiatives that strengthen the society's professional community.

Lukong Stella Shulika, Ph.D.

Lukong Stella Shulika, Ph.D. Director of Partnerships, Policy and External Relations Leads strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement with governments, regional organizations (e.g., AU, ECOWAS, SADC), universities, development partners, civil society, and the private sector. Oversees policy advocacy, fundraising, communications, outreach, and external relations to advance the society's mission.
